Bobby Jones (13/12/3/3/3) vs Trail Blazers, 1977-78, highlights
February 12, 1978, Denver Nuggets at Portland Trail Blazers highlights focusing mostly on Bobby Jones.
box score: www.basketball-reference.com/boxscores/197802120POR.html
Bobby Jones probably had his most impactful season a year before this one, in 1976-1977 (his first in the NBA). In 1978, despite dealing with side effects from medication he had to take due to asthma, occasional epileptic seizures, and a chronic heart disorder, he still managed to have another great year (playing less games but more minutes per match). On this one, versus the reigning champs (and the team that took Denver out of the Playoffs in the previous year), Bobby helped the Nuggets defeat the Trail Blazers and end their streak of 45 consecutive home victories; with Denver becoming the only team that hadn’t lost against Portland, that season.
The now Hall of Famer played his usual unbelievable defense... He was EVERYWHERE with tremendous help D, and also the main factor in containing Maurice Lucas (who was on a hot shooting streak, previously). For the year Lucas averaged 16.4 points per game on 45.8% from the field… on this one he was held to 8 points on 36.4% FG.
Jones also scored 13 points on great efficiency, he was rebounding extremely well, hustling all out, showing nice passing capabilities, and being clutch.
Highlights also include Bill Walton, David Thompson, Dan Issel, Maurice Lucas, Lionel Hollins, Bob Gross, Bob Wilkerson, Lloyd Neal, Ralph Simpson, Johhny Davis, Mack Calvin, Larry Steele, Anthony Roberts, Darnell Hillman, Tom Owens...

Did Pete Maravich pull 'the Shammgod' back in the day?!

The Shammgod is a type of crossover dribble where you bounce the ball forward to a risky position and then use the other hand to bring the ball back to the opposite side. Named after player God Shammgod. Highlights of Erving and Maravich at the All-Star Game, on 'Red on Roundball' and on 'The Dick Cavett Show'! In 1972 the Atlanta Hawks almost acquired Julius Erving. One of those bigs what-ifs in NBA history; it certainly could've been one of the most exciting teams ever with Dr J and Pete, plus Lou Hudson and Walt Bellamy... More on this subject (including info about Erving's three exhibitions...

Available footage (there's not much from Maravich, AT ALL, out there) of Pistol Pete dunking... One is a warm-up dunk during his time with the Atlanta Hawks, and the other is an in-game dunk in his later days with the New Orleans Jazz. Also, at the beginning, there's a quote from Dr J about Pete's jumping ability.

    In the pantheon of basketball stars, brighter stars and brightest stars, Larry Bird is a God. And if you don't see he's one of the best, if not the absolute best, then you have completely lost your mind.

    Moncrief , Micheal Cooper , Bobby Jones , Dennis Rodman Bill Russell...my All-Time defensive team...they'd rarely score 100 points...but rarely give up 90

    • @BasketballJones48021
      @BasketballJones48021 2 місяці тому

      That would be a godly defensive team, no doubt! Yeah, you got Moncrief who could average 20+ points per game, Bill Russell could reach that 20 mark, Bobby Jones at his best could give you around 15 PPG, Rodman likely over 10 if needed, while Michael Cooper as a starter and with enough minutes/shots could probably reach 15… so yeah - like you’ve said - they’d rarely score 100 points (but then again you also have to factor in what the bench would do); and definitely.. they’d rarely give up 90!
